10 of the Coolest Urban Chicken Coop Plans
1. Little Red Chicken Coop
This adorable little chicken coop looks like it’s super easy to build. I have zero experience with carpentry and even I could understand the steps!
The diagrams are color coded and well illustrated, showing exactly where each piece goes. This urban chicken coop even has a compact chicken run below the coop to save on space.
I think you could even make this coop moveable so you could give the hens fresh grass every few weeks!

2. The South City Coop
This small chicken coop is just too cute for words!
I think my favorite parts are the funky green paint and the cute little lamp above the door. It just has such a homey feel to it, and its tiny size means it will be a perfect fit in almost any urban lot!

3. Wood Pallet Chicken Coop
Now, if you’re looking for the most free chicken coop you could ever find, this is it!
Not only are the building plans free, with lots of photos, the materials are free too! This cute little coop is made out of wooden pallets, which can easily be found for free sitting out back of big box stores, just be sure you ask if you can take them first!
Be careful when selecting pallets for a chicken coop. Because many wooden pallets were used to ship chemicals, they can be contaminated. Always be sure to get your pallets from a reputable place, and when in doubt, ask what it was used for before taking it!
Add a lick of paint and some fun stencils to this free coop and it will not only last longer, it will look prettier too!
4. Swingset Chicken coop
This chicken coop is such a cool way to re-use an old swingset!
The swings were removed, chicken wire was added, and an enclosure was formed on one side for protection from the elements. What a cool idea!
You could easily make this simple coop in a few hours, and for very little cash. However, the only issue I could see would be if you live an area that sees nasty winters. In that case you’d want to make a bigger effort to enclose the coop on all sides.
5. Small coop with planter
This teensy coop would be perfect for three or four of your favorite hens!
It has everything they could possibly need to stay happy and healthy. This coop has a built in run underneath, a nesting box with outside access, and it even has space for a cute little garden!
You could grow herbs and greens just for your chickies!
6. Wichita Cabin Coop
This adorable coop looks like it would be right at home nestled in the deep woods with a crackling campfire nearby.
To see tons of photos and a video of this coop going up, don’t miss Tinkering Lab’s post about it! You’ll get a good idea of how much work needs to go into construction, and lots of fun ideas for added extras for your flock!
7. Raised Chicken Coop
This coop is compact and functional, and the best part? It’s raised up off the ground!
Building your coop up off the ground can deter predators and pests from getting inside, and keeps the coop a little warmer in the winter.
It’s also great because it can be easily moved to a new location, something you can’t say about most chicken coops!
This website is great because it has the exact urban chicken coop plans and diagrams all laid out for you, so it’s easy even for a beginner!
8. The Urban Chicken Coop Plans
How stinking cute is this little coop? I adore the flower boxes outside the window! I also love the egg yolk yellow paint that was used to paint the outside too.
While this site doesn’t have explicit plans for this coop, there are dimensions and supplies listed as well as epic tons of photos to guide you. This coop is really pretty simple but so stunning!
9. Playhouse Chicken Coop
This cute coop was made from a repurposed play house! The main structure was already built, so they put it up on stilts, covered the windows with hardware cloth and built a chicken run around it! We love this super easy, cheap, and green way of going about building a chicken coop.
10. Trictle’s Chicken Coop
This tiny 4×4 coop will make your hens very happy indeed! With a bump out nesting box for extra indoor space, a window flower box, and stilts, this coop has everything you need for your urban chicken flock, and more!
Now that you’ve been inspired by all these cute coops, a word of caution. Most of these blog posts and discussion forums have a space for, “What I would have done different” and almost all of the builders stated, “I wish I’d made it bigger.”
Remember, chickens are like potato chips, you can’t stop once you start. It’s always smart to build the biggest coop that you can comfortably fit in your yard, and afford. You’ll never regret having more space for more birds!
