Finding the perfect chicken names for your flock can be quite a daunting task. There are so many names to choose from, how do you pick one that perfectly reflects that little ball of fluff?
When we brought home our first batch of peeping chicks we we were overwhelmed with excitement and adoration of these cute little birds. It wasn’t long before we started to see their individual personalities shining through, and we quickly crumbled under our resistance to avoid naming them. One by one, the chicks were graced with names that fit them perfectly, but it sure wasn’t easy finding those names!
Many years later, we’ve helped to name hundreds of chicks, and over time have compiled a list of super fun, creative, and perfect names for chickens. My own frustration over finding names for chickens inspired me to publish this list for you, dear reader, to help you name your flock.
I hope you enjoy it, and please don’t forget to add your favorite chicken names to the comments below!

Our first three chics were named: Tikka (for tikka masala), General Tso (know as “the general” and turned out to be a rooster so the name was fitting) and then Coq a Vin (coco for short). We thought food names were funny, little did we know that naming them was the first step to loving them and wanting more chickens!
Gabriele Frank says
My first chicken were 6 ex battery hens. Because of their bad start in life, i thought they needed strong names: Amelia Earhardt, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, Emily Pankhurst, Marie Curie and Sophie Scholl! Shortly after we received another 3 rescues, this time from a kosher chicken farm. We named them Anne Frank, Barbara Streisand and Mary Christmas! We also have two chicks, Madonna and Billie Holiday, though it seems Billie will be a Billy! Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald ars our little black Bantams. Sony & Cher, Gloria, Esmeralda, Teresa and Ottilia make it a full coop! I love my ladies. Alyssa Moore says
We have Dopey, Hotwheels, Rocky Roads and Ginger and Eswina(from chicken run), Blondie, and Chickaletta
Meredith Skyer says
Hotwheels!! That has to be the most hilarious chicken name I’ve ever heard!!
Nana of Zanita says
@Alyssa Moore – I laughed when I saw your chicken names! I’ve got several of them!
So, when I first got my 4, they were tiny and straight run, so I called them “Our Sisters of Perpetual Poultry” but as they grew, it was clear one was a rooster. Since “sisters” are normally nuns, I thought about a good male counterpart and came up with ‘Frier.’ So instead I spelt it ‘fryer’ and he’s now Fryer Tuck! Then one of the females is distinctively *not* an Americauna like the rest, so her name is Henrietta. So the two remaining females became Chickoletta (from Paw Patrol which my 4 yr old granddaughter watches,) and Chickorita, named after the Pokemon which my 8yr old grandson watches.
Then, today, my husband gets a case of chicken math and brings home two more. One is completely blond, so she got named blondie (not sure if my inspiration was the Blondie from the comics or the band from the ’80s) and the little brown striped one that’s very shy Bebe. That one just came to me while holding her.
Jan says
I named one hen Penelope then when she hatched a chick I named her Penelopeep. Another year, I named my hens after the women on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Of course, the queen of my coop is Michaela Quinn, then I had Grace, Colleen, Myra and Dorothy.
P.s. says
Yes. Love that show
Richard Taft says

Nicole says
Our two are Henny (we have a one year old, thought henny would be an easy name to say lol) she was dumped (thrown over the fence) where I work, too old to lay eggs… And our pullet is called Dinosaur, because chickens are the closest living relative to the T-Rex. ?
Kimberleigh says
our girls are Rhoda the Rhode Island Red (that turned out to be a buff Orpington), Dixie, Rex Rooster, Bustle, and Peticoat (bantam Cochins bc they look like they came from the Victorian Era), Polly Polish and Liberaci (both Polish and his top knot is completely over the top and gaudy), Love and HannahChuck (silkies my daughter named. She didn’t know if it was a hen or a roo so she gave it a name that would go either way ?), Reginald Rooster (blue Marans), Martha and Magda (copper Marans), Ophelia, Odette, and Octavia (VERY large black and grey orps), Eagle and Lola (Amerasians my son named ?)
Kim says
This list is hilarious and so are the comment names. My 1st 3 Easter Eggers were named Pickle, Butter, and Tater. I decided I needed to keep a food theme with the names. Then I just had to have more so I added 4 more 2 Buff Orpingtons named Banana and Beans and 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks named Oates (like Hall and Oates but still a food) and Jelly. I of course needed more (cause once you start chicken raising you can’t stop) so I received 3 Barred Cochin Bantams named Sprout, Pepper, and Jam and 3 more Easter Eggers named Sushi, Toast, Cinnamon.
Mary says
I name all mine after the First Ladies. We have had Martha, Sarah, and Ida. We currently have Abigail, Lou, Lady Bird, and Edith. If I could have roosters they would be named after the presidents.

Love for science influenced my choice of chicken names: The metallic brown one became Copernica, followed by Andromeda, Calliope, Halo, Calypso, and (Alpha) Centauri–the mean girl. I guess space, space stations, satellites were part of it….
Kelly says
These comments are hilarious! I can’t go without leaving my chicken names too. We try to let the personalities of the new chicks tell us their names so they might go weeks nameless.

Helicopter got her name because she flies straight up when she gets excited. and Slow poke…well, she was the chicken who didn’t start laying eggs till she was seven months old and we threatened to make her chicken soup if she wasn’t laying by the time we got back from Thanksgiving. I got a text saying I had two brown eggs from our friends who were watching them. She also likes to move really slowly around you when you’re trying to collect eggs, clean the coop, etc.

My hens are Lola the Buff Orpington, Gabby the Silver lace, Iris the plymouth barred rock, Gwen the australorp, Patunia gray ameraucana (blue eggs) and Eva white/bage ameraucana (green olive eggs)
Each have a unique personality.
Iris is the queen of all and kinda mean.
Patunia and Eva are the smallest and more scirash.
The friendliest and also the one that produces the most eggs is Gwen.
Gabby procracinates to go to bed like my kid and she will fly to my lap if I have something in my hands.
Lola is beautiful and fat. Her butt wiggle a lot when she runs.
My shepherd/Rottweiler mix Bella loves her chickens.

I wanted to name my girls old timey names to honor my grandma and great grandma who had chickens. We were watching the HBO series Deadwood when we got our first chicks and that gave me the idea to look up names of old west “soiled doves”. My son named our white hen Chickaletta from his fav cartoon Paw Patrol for which it had a white chicken named Chickaletta lol. Also named our barred Dominique, Flash, because as a chick & even now she’s super quick!! He’s huge into Marvel & DC comics & loves running around in his Flash cape which is why at 2 years old he came up with her name. Also we have a hen named Meg for Nutmeg because she just has this red blotch on her head as if Nutmeg fell on to her plus she truly is a Nut compared to the rest lol. We have Patty, after a peppermint patty because she’s black & white, Penny which is common, Henrietta, Dom for Domino who is our barred orphington roo & we haven’t named our female orphington but I’m thinking Cookie because she’s black & white like an Oreo.

We were recently given 40 chickens. They do not all have names yet, and perhaps never will (numbers!).I’m leaning towards Babe’s mother’s naming philosophy (“She called us all Babe”) and at the moment calling most of the flock Chook. The low hen on the pecking order is called Baldy (the children named her) and there are a few other names….
However, Hetty and Harriet are good and classic hen names from Graham Oakley’s wonderful book about the adventures of two runaway chickens.

Ive named my easter egger hen easter, ive also used the name red on my oldest hen that was a shade of red she was hard to catch when we just started letting them roam free. Made me think of the country song old red. And last of unnamed names was little man i had this one rooster he was our only small one i got him cause i fell in love with his colors. Anyways he would wait till u turned around and then start after u and stop when u said anything or turned back around other than that he was a sweetie he’d jump on my shoulder( our coop was short so i was hunching over ) and let me pet him and eat out of my palm i wore gloves of course im not completly trustin of chicken due to them chasing me when i was a kid which is why my number one rule is u attact me i eat u. Plain and simple i make sure the kids are nice and handle them with lots of tlc when they are babies. So in my book they have no reason to be agressive.anyways thought id add some more ideas out there. Not many of our chickens get names of thier own we buy them in large groups often looking so simular to each other. But they are admired and called my ladies currantly we have 16 ladies and only four have names. Which reminds me my daughter named her first chicken ( she paid for with her own money) fluttershy she is a sweetie too. All the ladies are so fun to watch and very chubby sometimes i think they are over feed. With the way they waddle when they come running for the grains or scrapes.

I know this is an old post, but I had to respond. I wanted to name our chick “old biddy” names, but my mom refused. So three years ago, when we first got chickens – 6 golden sex-links – we named them:
Sage (aka “Sagey,” our alpha)
Cinnamon (aka “Cinnabon”)
Nutmeg (aka “Nutty,” “Nutty the Spazz,” and “Nutty McNuttNutt”)
Ginger (aka “Gingie” and “GinGin;” she only lived to be about 8 months old)
Lavender (died last Summer)
Rosemary (aka “Rosy,” “Rosy Posey,” “Rosy Posey Puddin’ ‘N Pie,” and “Wrong Way Rosy;” she also died last summer)
Last Spring, we added 4 ISA Browns:
Dandelion (aka “Dandy”)
Clover
Paprika (aka “Pappy”)
Marigold (aka “Goldie”)
The ISA browns are bigger than the Golden Sex-Links which has caused pecking-order problems and Paprika and Marigold tend to be a little bit mean to Cinnamon & Nutty. Sometimes I’ll refer to Pappy and Goldie as “Thelma and Louise” or “Frick and Frack.” My sister calls them “the honyawks.” I often wonder if people think we’re yelling at our dad when we yell “Knock it off, Pappy!” LOL
Gina says
We’ve had a rough fall and winter 🙁
We lost ‘New Voices Woman’, ‘Nugget’ (pet rooster), ‘Little Red’, ‘Blinkie’ (Black Ink), and ‘Singer’ (sounded like an old sewing machine!) – we still have ‘Big Momma’, ‘Scruffy’ (perpetually looks like she’s had a rough night), and ‘Fabio’ (main rooster – very pretty, not so bright)
I’ll be getting a hatchling hopefully next weekend, thinking of ‘Bo Peep’ or ‘Beau Peep’ – time will tell 🙂
Also have ordered 8 RSL pullets

Hello all!
I recently purchased a fertilised chicken egg from a farmer as I hoped to have it hatch in my presence so that the chick would imprint on me. I was successful in doing so however as my little chick has grown up I’ve come to realise that it is not a chicken at all! At first I thought it was just an ‘ugly duckling’ type of chick but it actually turned out to be an ugly duckling! I was furious with the farmer as he’d charged me £250 for this chick. He had pulled the feathers over my eyes and as you can imagine I was in quite a flap.
I now need to rename my DUCK with a more species appropriate name. Can you recommend any duck names?
Thank you x
